The Queen Returns: America's Greatest Gravel Race Makes a Comeback

Before gravel riding became cycling's hottest trend, there was Battenkill. For years, this legendary race sent riders bouncing across the unpaved back roads of upstate New York, earning its nickname as "America's Queen of the Classics." Then it vanished. Now, after a seven-year silence, the Queen is ready to reclaim her crown.

The 2025 edition marks more than just a return – it's a renaissance. The course remains true to its roots, weaving through Washington County's covered bridges and rolling farmland, mixing smooth tarmac with challenging gravel sectors. But this time, there's something for everyone: competitive races for the ambitious, gran fondo distances for those seeking their own adventure.

"Battenkill was doing gravel before gravel was cool," says Dieter Drake, the event's original founder, who's returned as Race Director. "To bring it back now, when mixed-surface riding has exploded globally – the timing couldn't be better."

The race's revival has drawn support from New York's own cycling community. Verge, the custom cycling apparel maker, has signed on as official clothing partner, creating special winner jerseys for each category and exclusive event kit available to participants.

"This race is practically in our backyard," notes Charlie Issendorf, Verge's VP of Sales & Marketing. "Supporting Battenkill's return isn't just business – it's about bringing back a piece of American cycling history."

As riders cross the finish line in downtown Cambridge this year, they'll find more than just timing chips and medals waiting. With live entertainment and celebrations planned near the historic Cambridge Hotel and Train Depot, Battenkill is set to prove that even after seven years away, some classics never lose their crown.
